WAKE UP, WE HUMANS!

BAD LEADERS ARE BRINGING THE PLANET TO THE EDGE OF DOOM. THIS BOOK SHOWS US WE STILL HAVE TIME TO TAKE A DIFFERENT PATH – IF WE FOLLOWERS DEMAND BETTER LEADERSHIP AT WORK AND IN THE WORLD

We are outraged by the people who climb to the top of the greasy pole and emerge as our leaders. But being outraged doesn’t do any good – it still leaves us powerless. This book offers a way forward to a different kind of leadership that tackles the environment crisis head on. Corporate leaders have to change. Political leaders have to change. All of us have to change. We have to stop being indignant and start being powerful. We don’t have much time to make the changes that are needed.

Place Your Bets

Babies born in the year 2020 will turn 80 in the year 2100. Here are the latest odds for them.

Different ways of organising

The Climate Crisis won’t get resolved by us moaning at our lousy leaders and their appalling indecision. Environmental destruction won’t be stopped by bosses who have learned to speak green cliches. We need to hold our leaders to account – and we followers need to hold ourselves to account as well if we are going to wake up and read the writing on the wall.

The We
Humans
Workbook

On humanity

Species like ours don’t last long. There have been many upright apes with big brains over the last few million years. These species are all gone. We are the only ones left.

On the current crisis

We have achieved so much in the blink of an evolutionary eye – a very young and hugely successful species. We got ourselves into this mess using our human skills. Our skills are our only hope of getting out of the mess.

On leadership

Leadership is a constant that constantly changes in how it is displayed. The problem of the 21 st century is that social organisation has changed radically but our leadership behaviours have failed to change at the same speed.

On followership

The problems of our age affect all of us. All of us need to come together to tackle them. Powerful followership is key to that process. This participation will not emerge when power is held tightly by a narrow leadership caste.

On the workplace

If my experience demonstrates that my voice does not matter then I will learn to be powerless. If I am told that my voice matters – but then my voice is ignored – I learn to be cynical. If experience tells me that I can make a difference, then I can develop the skills to be powerful.

On community

We are a smart species – we can juggle more than two things at once. We need smart leaders who are comfortable with complexity and don’t reduce it to a false simplicity of “This is good and this is bad”. It is our job as followers to co-create the leadership we need for our time: a leadership which builds community.
